Dimoria College is the brainchild of a group of
highly motivated social entrepreneurs who in the seventies dreamt of
bringing the gospel of
Higher education to this relatively backward tribal belt area of Dimoria.
Led by the indomitable zeal of patrons of learning like late Padmakanta
Deka (founder president ), Late Santa Ram Deka (Founder secretary ),late
Prasanta Deka , late Gopinath Sarma, late Krishna Kanta Bhuyan, the
people of Dimoria started a public campaign for the establishment of a
college. Their effort were augmented by donation and cooperation from
all sections of local society ranging from rich businessmen like
Omkarlal Agarwala to Humble thelawalas and firewood sellers.
The college was inaugurated on 29th August,1979 in a
small classroom at Khetri high school with fifty seven student and three
teachers. Late Pandit Binanda Chandra Barman was the founder Principal (
1979-80 ) followed By Sri Hari Prasad Medhi ( 1980-March, 1981 ). Sri
Ram Chandra Bharali Assumed the stewardship of the College on 14th
April, 1981 and retired on 31/12/2010.
Arts Stream of the College was brought under deficit
grants-in-aid system On 1st. February 1986. This development encouraged
the College to open Science Stream in H.S. level in the year 1987.B.Sc.
Course was started in 1992 and the Stream got a fillip with the
inauguration of the Ambedkar Science Block by the then Hon'ble
Vice-President of India, Sri K. R. Narayanan. The Science Stream was
brought under deficit grants-in-aid system in 1996. Always striving for
the goals of greater excellence, the College opened Post-Graduate
Classes in Assamese, Political Science and Economics in 1992. Famous
Scholars like Prof. V. V. Rao & Sahityacharya Prof. Golak Ch. Goswami
Used to take P. G. classes in the early years and encourage the college
with Their invaluable advice and wisdom. A new feather was added to the
P. G. wing in 2004 with the introduction of a totally unique and
emerging Science Course in Eco-Restoration. In 2008 Dimoria College
earned the rare distinction Of signing a memorandum of understanding
with Brandenburg Technical University ,Cottbus,Germany on mutual
exchange of student and faculty and Evaluation of courses of study along
with mutual recognition of Eco-restoration Students' performance in Dimoria College. It was followed by the introduction of a P. G. course
in Environmental Management in the year 2008.
These apart, several U.G.C sponsored vocational
courses along with distance education programme under IGNOU have also
been orientation of the college , U.G.C. has provide it with a centre
for Ambedkar Studies with the objective of of spreading the teaching and
philosophy of Dr. B.R Ambedkar.
In addition to the hard work and perseverance of the
college community, we are blessed to have among our patrons, a great
intellectual figure like Prime minister Dr. Manmohan Shing who has
visited the college on more than one occasioned extended his helping
hand in the completion of various projects of yhe college. Being the
only rural post Graduate Intuition in Assam, Dimoria college was awarded
'A' graded by NAAC in recognition of its role as a harbinger of social
change through the instrument of higher education. The year 2010 saw our
college with Potential for Excellence the UGC where by it has earned the
highly cherished membership of selected club of 149 college out more
than 600 colleges through India under UCG's recognition. The august
arrival of Former President of India Dr. A.P.J Abdul kalam to our
college of 6th February,2010 to motivate our students in the path of
nation building was jewel on the crown of the above achievements. Thus
from a very humble beginning in 1979 the college has matured itself into
a full fledged centre of learning and excellence.
The preset day college has sprawling campus of more
than twenty four bighas of land including built up area and spacious
playground. Facilities including a well stoked Morden library with
photocopying and internet facility, Departmental library , well equipped
laboratories, four PG departments , a computer science cum IT
department, a language laboratory, two canteens for students, teachers &
non-teaching staff, five separate hostels for boys and girls together
with multipurpose Auditorium complex. The college has completed 3 major
research projects and 64 minor research projects and it is counting 4
major research projects and 22 minor research projects sponsored by UGC.
Presently more than one hundred fourty teaching and non-teaching staff
are working in the college for promotion of teaching, learning,
evaluation, innovation, research, and extantion services fpr the greater
goal of social upliftment.
